Every serious international wingshooter has heard the stories about the legendary dove hunting in Argentina. Cordoba dove hunts receive the most attention, and rightfully so…for there are higher concentrations of Golden Eared Dove in and around this region of Argentina than anywhere else in the country—and higher concentrations of Argentina dove hunting outfitters too!
Despite the hoards of outfitters and thousands of hunters that come to Cordoba each year from around the world, the shooting is never diminished. Therefore, the well-deserved reputation of having the best dove hunting in South America is destined to continue.
The fact is there are many other spectacular high volume dove hunting destinations in Argentina, and throughout South America. Those planning an Argentina dove hunting trip should not overlook some of the other great locations: Salta, Santiago del Estero, Tucuman, and Santa Fe province. Even Entre Rios can offer great Argentina dove hunting in certain locations.
But it does not stop there…Argentina dove hunting is the most talked about, but there are two other countries that offer South American dove hunting that is on par with Argentina: Uruguay and Bolivia.
The dove hunting in Uruguay is nothing short of amazing, and many say that the Bolivia dove hunting is as good as the dove hunting in Cordoba.
So while Argentina offer dove hunting in South America that is as good as it gets, one should keep in mind that there are other destinations as well that can offer up an experience with just as much shooting, and a total experience that is unique to each destination.
No matter where you choose to go dove hunting in South America, one of the most important considerations in selecting an Argentina dove hunting outfitter, or any other bird hunting outfitter in South America is the quality of firearms that they have in stock for rent.
It is an expensive proposition to bring two of your own guns into the country, and that is what you will need to do if you plan on using your own firearms. This is high volume dove hunting, and your equipment will be tested to the max.
If you only choose to bring one gun, or are going to rent guns, it is very important that your Argentina bird hunting outfitter has high quality dove hunting shotguns that are in excellent condition, and that they have plenty of spares in the event that your shotgun malfunctions, or even if your are renting their guns, that they have enough extra shotguns to plan for the contingency of two or more of their own shotguns malfunctioning on the same outing.
In addition, you will want to bring a lot of protective gear to insulate your body from the elements, and from the physical punishment that shooting 1,000 birds per day can exude on your body.
For example, anyone considering an Argentina dove hunt should know that a Kevlar shoulder protector is a must for those who are planning to shoot all day, for two or more days. Even though the recoil for 20 and 20 ga. are not significant, anyone who has never experienced shooting 4,000-plus rounds of shells per day should know that it can, and will take a toll on your shoulder after two days, making the third and fourth day (if applicable) a painful ordeal.
It is intuitive for most people to seek relief from the recoil, and use adequate protection, but the most often overlooked piece of gear are the shooting gloves. Not protecting your fingers and hands can ruin a dove hunting trip to Argentina on day one. Your fingers will quickly become bruised and cut from shoving in one shotgun shell after another while the birds are whizzing overhead at an unbelievable pace. Those who forget, or neglect to use gloves will only do so one time, however, as it is truly that painful and annoying to put one’s hands through that kind of abuse.
Finally, the sun and wind can also take its toll on your body if you are not using copious amounts of sunscreen and/or protecting yourself with long pants, long sleeves, and protective headgear. Even in mild temperatures at these latitudes, one can become sunburned quickly.
Even though these suggestions might seem obvious to most experienced hunters, they are sometimes overlooked during the excitement of the high volume shooting that is always a given when hunting in Argentina, Uruguay, and Bolivia.
