Dorado Fishing Tackle

The following trips will help you select the best gear and tackle for your next freshwater dorado fishing trip to Argentina or Uruguay.

Most anglers prefer to fish using a combination of trolling and spinning tactics—so for these dorado fishermen we recommend the following dorado fishing rods and reels.

  • Rod: Middle action 7/8 foot with a good butt section for fighting.
  • Reels: Bait casting reels ( Abu Garcia/ Penn) with enough capacity for 200/250 yards of nylon 0.40.
  • Leader: Steel leaders 20/30 cm each (bring material to build such steel wire 20 pounds test, swivels, snaps, sleeves.
  • Baits: Spoons, slabs, jigs and baits for deep, middle water and surface. Rattlers, raps, skitters, etc) in Silver, Gold, Yellow and sparkling and shining colors: Size: 3 to 6 inches 20 to 30 grams.
  • Sinkers: flat, pyramid, disc 15 to 40 grams.

Many intrepid anglers choose to hunt down big Dorado with a fly rod. Fly fishing for dorado can be amazing, especially on lightweight tackle. But for all but he most experienced fly fishing anglers,, we recommend the following for dorado fly fishing in Argentina and Uruguay:

  • Fly Rod: 8/10 weight 9 ft.
  • Reels: Heavy reels with plenty of room for 200/300 yards of 30 pounds test backing. Must be the type used for bonefishing.
  • Lines: Both sinking and floating lines. Teeny lines 200/300 are good.
  • Flies: Any Tarpon patterns are good with lots of flash and sparkling material on them. Steel Wire leader must be attached to the body of the fly when tied and a portion of four inches with a loop at the end to connect to the line. Hooks must have a long shank (3 to 4 inches) and a big gap (at least 1 ½ inches).
