Many a duckman have claimed that their Argentina duck hunting trip to La Calera was one of their most memorable waterfowl hunting trips of all time.  Argentina Outfitters has hosted many of the industry most experienced waterfowlers on Argentina hunting trips: the gust book includes names like Stuart Williams, Jeff Foiles, and Chris Dorsey. Outfitter Rob McAndrew offers many different hunting and fishing venues in Argentina and Uruguay.  He opened La Calera in 2004, and it has turned out to be a fine Argentina duck hunting destination—the kind of destination that leaves the shooter with a taste of what duck hunting in South Dakota must have been like in the early 1900’s.

Argentina Outfitters possesses the exclusive hunting rights on this huge 13,500 acre ranch. La Calera is situated in the backwaters of the Parana River, which spills into a large delta that is home to millions of waterfowl and shore birds.  Over half of the estancia is pure wetland habitat, making it the perfect South American duck shooting destination.  Rob has designed very comfortable dry blinds for his shooters, and the travel time to the marshes ranges from fifteen minutes, to forty—but never longer.  Rob’s native Argentine hunting guides use 4x4 vehicles and small poke boats to transfer duck hunters to the blinds.

La Calera offers the avid waterfowler and upland hunter many great wingshooting opportunities. The bird hunting available at La Calera is divided up into two types of outings: duck hunting, and upland hunting.  The legendary Rosybill Pochard duck, and upland Perdiz are the most abundant species of birds at La Calera.  The Rosybill Pochard is probably the most sought after duck in South America, and no other duck decoys more easily, or in grater numbers, than the Rosybill.  The Rosie also makes great table fare, and chef Yolvi prepares one of the best roast duck breasts (covered in a delicious mustard sauce) that you will ever stick a fork into.  Perdiz are equally inviting, the shooting is challenging, and limits are reached quickly.  The Perdiz is slightly larger than a bobwhite quail, but behaves more like a Hun on the ground.  Once flushed, this bird most often punches out low and hard, but sometimes leaps high into the air, always leaving the shooter guessing.

THE HUNT

All respectable duck hunting outfitters in Argentina shoot over decoys, and La Calera is no exception.  Motorized spinning wing decoys work down here just like they did on the first day they were ever used in North America…there are simply too many birds down here that have never seen a decoy, therefore never becoming timid.   Rob keeps the quality high by limiting each duck blind to two shooters, just as it should be.  Once the first part of the morning action comes to a lull, your barrel will be smoking, and you will have many bags full of ducks.  While you enjoy the scenery, and lie in wait for the next bunch of birds, Rob’s gauchos will be thrashing through the marshes on horseback, lifting thousands of ducks into the air, driving them into your decoys.

The afternoons at La Calera consist of more duck shooting, or Perdiz hunting. Rob’s well trained pointing dogs will quickly find and pin down the elusive birds as you walk up behind and flush them.  The Perdiz are all wild birds, so the shooting is not high volume (the limit is ten at the time of this writing), but offers the hunter a chance at experiencing this sporting little gamer.  Perdiz are as delicious on the table, as they are fun to hunt, and if you can taste the difference between a Perdiz and a quail, you should be presented with award.  Chef Yolvi prepares these delicious birds nightly for the hunters at La Calera.

The weather at La Calera can be very volatile.  Conditions can be quite cold and windy when you step out in the morning (35-40 F) and warm up to 75 by mid afternoon.  Any experienced waterfowler who has been on an Argentina duck hunt will give you the same advice: bring waders—not hip boots—and dress in multiple layers that can be added or shed with the changing temperatures and winds.  There is no steel shot law, no is any steel shot even available in Argentina.  Bring open chokes, and plan to shoot all birds inside of thirty yards.  Leave your plugs at home too, you won't need them either…
