THE TRIP

Geographical Location: Rio Gallegos, Argentina

For those intrepid anglers who are in pursuit of some of the finest sea run brown trout fishing in Argentina, two words should come to mind: Rio Gallegos. And if you are seriously considering a sea trout fishing trip to Argentina in this region, you should plan your arrival between mid November 15th and April 15th, with December and January offering the warmest weather.

Catch and release fishing in Argentina: The Rio Gallegos River is the southernmost river on the mainland in Southern Patagonia, and home to Bella Vista Lodge, one of the best trout fishing lodges in Argentina.

Bella Vista sits between to large sheep farming operations that encompass over six hundred and fifty thousand acres, which is larger than most English counties! While fishing in Rio Gallegos, one will see many other interesting sights and wildlife. Birds such as condors, flightless steamer ducks, flamingos, swans, and even a few falcons soar over the valley, offering a beautiful scene that will not be soon forgotten.

THE ANGLING

The Sea-Run Brown trout fishing in Argentina has made the country famous for being host to some of the worlds best trout fisheries, and nowhere else are these fish more abundant than here in the rivers, and tributaries of Rio Gallegos.

The fishing out of Bella Vista Lodge takes place in two principal fisheries. The first is the fifty-kilometer stretch of the Rio Gallegos itself where the lodge property lies, and the second is the Gallegos Chico, a spring-fed tributary off of the main river which has twenty kilometers of very productive pools. The abundance of weed growth, and plentiful amount of aquatic food sources combine to make the Gallegos Chico one of the best rivers for dry fly fishing in Argentina.

Heavily stocked in the 1920’s and 1930’s, the brown trout that migrate through our waters here have established a healthy population of very large running fish that can only be rivaled by a handful of other rivers in the world.

The size of the brown trout in this river continues to grow every year, and when fishing at Bella Vista, one has a chance of catching a trophy brown tout on every cast.

Best fly rods for fishing Rio Gallegos: Here are some fly fishing tips that will help you outfit yourself for your Patagonia fishing trip to Bella Vista Lodge.

Although many different fly fishing rods have been put to the test the Rio Gallegos, we recommend a single-handed rod: a 9, 91/2 or 10 footer for a No. 8 line. This should be just about the right balance for most anglers who desire to cover the water, and experience the optimal level of sport. Normally, the wind here on the Rio Gallegos blows downstream, or southwest, if you will. A rod of the above size makes it easy to cast downwind, while an eight or nine weight rod helps one drive their lines into a headwind, if necessary. The moderate flow of this river, and its even-bottom makes an eight or nine weight rod your friend here…as in these conditions, they are capable of handling even the largest sea run brown trout—even those of up to 25 lbs., while still offering maximum sporting action when playing a smaller trout, or resident brown. We recommend that you bring a single-handed, nine foot, 4-6 weight rod for fishing the Gallegos Chico. Also, you will certainly want to bring a back up rod, so why not consider a two handed fly fishing rod? We find that two-handed rods are becoming increasingly popular with our customers who are veterans of the Rio Gallegos, because trout fishing on the Rio Gallegos requires the angler to cover a lot of water in a day—so naturally, having a two handed rod eases the cumulative casting fatigue that builds up over time. Two-handers also make any necessary mends to the line an easier proposition.

So give it a try, bring a two handed rod on your next sea trout fishing trip and learn how easy it can be to cast a comfortable line into the wind with minimal effort. If you are a beginner, or intermediate level fly fisherman new to two-handers, our Argentine fly fishing guides will be happy to assist you, and are able to get most anglers into a comfort zone relatively quickly. A high quality reel is crucial for playing big sea run brown trout. All anglers fishing for sea runs in Argentina should have a strong reel, with a smooth drag. Reels (and spare spools) need enough capacity for the line and at least 200 yards of twenty pound backing. Check the “What to Bring” section on our Information Center link for a full list and description of high quality fly fishing that is suitable for your next Patagonia fly fishing trip.

For fly fishing on the Gallegos Chico, a direct-drive trout reel will be suitable for your needs. Nervous Waters has some of the most acclaimed fishing guides in South America working at Bella Vista. All speak English fluently, and are certified fly casting instructors. Our Patagonia fly fishing guides can offer as much, or as little assistance as you desire during your fishing trip in Argentina, so just let us know what your particular skill level is, and we will host you accordingly.
