May, June and July are the best months to go tarpon fishing trip in Florida. We usually will be fishing the beaches surrounding the Tampa Bay area and St. Petersburg. But, we may also fish farther north or farther south, depending on fishing reports, water conditions, and numbers of fish presently available.
Note too that tarpon fishing charter days are usually based on three-quarter to full day rates, due to the time it takes to get you in position to catch a huge tarpon in Florida. This tarpon fishing trip begins with a flight into Tampa International airport if one is traveling by air, or to Clearwater, Florida if coming in by ground.
Most anglers choose a three day tarpon fishing trip, but shorter trips, and half day fishing trips for tarpon, as well as redfish and snook can be arranged. From Clearwater, this Florida tarpon fishing trip launches from an area known as the "Ft. De Soto Wetlands and Aquatic Management Area", a rich Florida fishing resource located at the southern end of St. Petersburg-about a 30 minute drive down Gulf blvd. (very nice.) From St. Petersburg it's just a few minutes drive to our tarpon fishing launch site ramp. And, from Tampa it's approximately 20 minutes via interstate 275 South.
The reasons we fish this area are numerous; * The beaches and surrounding waters are beautiful, and the tarpon fishing is great. * There are many areas & flats to hide from wind/weather--a necessity for any successful fly fishing trip in Florida. * The location at the mouth of Florida's largest estuary (Tampa Bay), an area with greater tide flow than most and is a natural fish highway and feeding station for hungry Florida tarpon. * The local area has excellent beaches, international shopping, restaurants, and hotels for every type of angler, family and budget.
For our area's tarpon fishing, 12 weight rods are the norm for tarpon on the fly. With a minimum of 250 yards of 30 lb. backing, it is not uncommon to be near-spooled on an average tarpon's first run, or second. Before booking a Florida tarpon fishing trip, anglers should get themselves in good shape, and be ready for the ultimate in hunting big game saltwater fish. An average sized Florida tarpon weighs in around 80 to 100 lbs., and it is not uncommon to hook many that push 130 to 160. And, although you are focused primarily on tarpon fishing, there may also be shots at other species such as jacks, cobia, snook, sharks, and many others.

Many anglers and hunters like to bring their own gear, as opposed to using gear provided buy their Florida fishing guide, or Florida hunting guide-so we don't discourage it. However please note that our tarpon fishing guides will also have Tibor Gulfstream reels (w/ 300 yards backing), G-Loomis (NEW) Cross Current Pro 1 (12 wt. - one piece) rods, and various 3M - Scientific Anglers (Mastery Series) Lines, on hand.
Our Tarpon fishing fly rods are professionally set up with the best 30 lb. backing on the market, correctly tied knots, and custom tied I.G.F.A. leaders and flies-everything you will need to be rigged and ready for big Florida tarpon. In the event you would like to bring your own tarpon fishing tackle, please just let us know in advance. Our Florida tarpon fishing guides will want to make sure you are properly equipped.
If you are bringing rods, please advise me as per how many you will bring so that we may pack the boat correctly. This info you can tell me the night before as we'll need to communicate then to check final weather, travel conditions, etc.-and I will let you know how the tarpon fishing has been going too.
We will normally leave the dock at dawn, and be fishing close to the beach-only 5 to 10 minutes away. Please be aware that tarpon fishing is a unique, and different, approach to fishing in most cases. Tarpon fishing is a lot like big game hunting. We, and I do mean we, will seek out the tarpon and find them as they travel up and down the beaches. All persons on board, whether anglers or passengers, are put to work to spot these magnificent fish. Many times the passengers sitting down in the boat spot many of the fish due to their lower vantage point on the water.
Also, if there is a passenger or second angler, they can be very helpful while a fish is being fought. Most of the time they are the water person (that's politically correct for water boy!), towel person, photographer, first mate (to the captain), deck hand, shark fighter and cheering section! When first hooked, the tarpon will be in total control-and this is to be expected. After the fireworks, and once the fight is on, taking instructions from your tarpon fishing guide will be of the utmost importance.
The angler must fight the tarpon efficiently and smartly to win most of these battles. Due to the large amount of adrenaline pumping through the tarpon angler's veins, many fish are lost as the fisher-person can't execute some very important techniques, and maneuvers during the heat of battle. Sound like fun? Then plan a tarpon fishing trip to Florida.
