THE TRIP

Geographical Location: Santa Cruz, Bolivia The fishing takes place north of Bolivia

Ryan McCollum’s goal is to bring the best sport to all Bolivian bound travelers-both wingshooters and anglers, he and his team at Wing Shooting the World have put together a smartly paced “cast and blast” trip in Bolivia that gives fly or spin anglers the chance to test their might against the meanest bass that swims—the peacock bass that hide jungle waters of a remote corner of northern Bolivia-along with the chance to shoot high volume doves or pigeons.

Three days of peacock bass fishing comes first, then followed by a quick charter flight and a change of equipment, anglers will then eagerly begin scanning the skies, where as dove or pigeon shooters they’ll enjoy the option to shoot high volume doves or pigeons on one of Wing Shooting the World’s proven dove or pigeon programs, where volume and consistency have become a hallmark of WSTW’s field operations.

THE FISHING

Each fishing day begins early, with a wake up knock, and hot coffee delivered to your door, followed by a fisherman’s breakfast and a short transfer to the boat for a day on the water. Peacock bass guides in Bolivia are native men, locals, who know the bass haunts and waterways and can put you on the fish. The peacocks in Bolivia are not the “hawgs” some anglers seek in the Amazon basins, bass run 2-10 pounds, but there are lots and lots of them, which makes for a great day of sport, punctuated by a cool drinks and a shore picnic. It’s not at all uncommon to catch twenty or thirty, or fifty, and when you think about two anglers typically being in the same boat—that equals almost non-stop action.

From non stop action on the bass—sportsmen then change lodges and pick up with non-stop dove or pigeon action. The format for shooting doves or pigeons is much the same as that for anglers. Shooters are greeted each morning with coffee, and after breakfast, guns and gear are loaded along with a mountain of shotgun shells and coolers, and it’s off to the dove fields. Driving times are mercifully short—drives average only a few minutes from the lodge to the dove field. Then it’s time for dove shooting, and until you have seen it, it is hard to believe it. Doves will be flying everywhere over harvested grain fields. Singles, pairs, small flocks, large flocks, virtually endless supplies of doves and shooting as hard or as easy as you want to make it. Pigeons fly in much the same fashion, but are tougher to hit, tougher to kill, and more wary. When the sun gets high, shooters repair to a gourmet picnic, then more dove or pigeon action until evening. What could be better? End each day in the comfort of the lodge, with friends or business partners, dinner and drinks.

THE ACCOMMODATIONS

From the get-go Wing Shooting the World has promised that they would stay on the move in Bolivia, no matter what the quarry, and so rather than showing the features of just one lodge, you can be secure in the knowledge that WSTW has a selection of fine lodges from which to draw.

These range from tropical style jungle camps for the peacock bass fishing, to 150 year old hacienda homes that house visiting shooters. All are spotlessly clean, and are served by full-time staffs that care as much about your comfort and needs as you do. Most lodges have four or five bedrooms, each with two beds, and each with bath.

Meals in Bolivia are uniformly delightful, and even after a busy fishing and shooting holiday, you probably won’t be going home any lighter!
