Yucatan Outfitters and Wing Shooting The World are
running a new fly fishing destination for backcountry
tarpon and snook fishing ideally located on Mexico's
sunny Yucatan Peninsula.
Here, far away from the
crowds on the "Mexican Riviera" and the boat and
angler traffic in Ascension Bay, a tarpon resource
exists which will delight the fly angler who
rightfully-craves sight fishing-and action. Tarpon
here, and also near Isla Holbox run from two to thirty
pounds-perfect for the 8-weight rod or light spinning
gear, and during the spring tarpon migration-the big
boys are here-tarpon running 200 pounds plus cruise
through these shallow waters, along with snook,
bonefish, permit and barracuda.
Mayan guides who know
the flats and mangroves will put you on the fish. They
are solid anglers who know fly fishing, fly tying as
well as conventional gear. They are all catch and
release guides, so this area will have
memorable fishing for years to come.

A tarpon trip with WSTW is a great adventure, and the daily schedule is designed to
maximize time on the water when fishing conditions are
best. After morning coffee has been delivered to your
door, you'll enjoy a fisherman's breakfast that
combines the best of American and Mexican morning
favorites. Then, it is off to the boats by 8:00 am a
run of ten to thirty minutes in smooth-riding
fiberglass skiffs. Once you reach the fishing area,
anglers take to the platform at the front of the boat
while your expert guide poles the boat quietly through
the mangroves and across shallow flats. Most fish are
sighted before you make a cast-making for some tall
drama, in short water. You'll jump tarpon, fight
snook, and stalk bonefish, permit and other flats
species, so bring a variety of tackle prepared for the
toughest fighting and jumping fish in saltwater.
Midday you'll enjoy a packed lunch on the water, with
more fishing until about 3 or 4pm, when the low sun
angle usually begins to make seeing difficult. Then
it's a short run back to the lodge to rest and relax.
Getting There:
It's easy to get to these Yucatan tarpon. Even if you
live in the snow-torn northern climates, you can leave
home in the morning and have an umbrella drink in your
hand on the beach by mid-afternoon. You just fly to
Cancun, Mexico which is served by almost every
commercial carrier of note, as well as many charter
airlines from almost every major US city. Cancun is a
major tourist destination, so clearing customs is a
breeze; once you emerge from customs, WSTW will greet
you at the airport and transfer you about 3hours on
paved highway in their air conditioned vans to their oceanfront lodge.

Your fishing lodging for this tarpon adventure might
as well be a tropical paradise. The lodge is air
conditioned and very comfortable, with clean and airy
bedrooms, each with private bath. The lodge sits on
the water, so sunrises and sets are spectacular. A
comfortable chair on your balcony makes each evening a
memory. The lodge is located in a small village, which
is very clean, colorful, and friendly. It's a fishing
village so our fresh-daily seafood comes from just
around the corner and straight to your plate.
