The Peridz hunting in Uruguay is the best in the world—unquestionably. Hunters can travel all over the continent of South America in search of upland game birds and will not come across half the number of upland birds (specifically the three species of Peridz: the Lesser Tinamou, the Colorado, and the Martineta) that call Western Uruguay home.
The birds are so thick that thirty flushes per hour are the norm, and any respectable wing shot can expect to have their Perdiz hunt in Uruguay over in less than an hour. The limit is 12 birds per hunter, per day.
The Perdiz is a sporty little gamer that prefers to run from danger whenever possible, as to not expose itself to airborne threats such as birdshot and raptors—and they are damn good at it. A Perdiz can render itself nearly invisible in grass that one will swear is not thicker than a golf course fairway, which can add to the challenge of Perdiz hunting for both dog and man alike.

When the Perdiz do take to the air, they are artful little dodgers, flying in a zigzag pattern that can be characterized by a low speedy flight out of the cover, followed by a “hit the deck” dive back into the cover (where they are always most comfortable) some 100 years from the area where the bird took flight.
Often times, the dogs can relocate the birds after their flight if the hunters did not keep their end of the bargain—a sometimes common occurrence when Perdiz hunting in South America. Perdiz are not covey birds, so unlike quail hunting, shooters can expect to find only singles and pairs, often hearing their chirping sounds from long distances.
When it comes to table fare, the Perdiz has no South American equal. No, they do not taste like chicken…they are every bit as succulent as quail, and are often pan fried, or grilled on the barbeque during the classic asado (BBQ) field lunches (formerly prepared by gauchos) that have made the countries of Argentina and Uruguay famous.
Because of the low volume, typically visiting international wingshooters will combine the Perdiz hunting with one or more of the following activities: Uruguay duck hunting, decoyed pigeon shooting, and high volume Uruguay dove hunting.

Mixed bag hunting in Argentina and Uruguay is a popular venue with many shooters who desire to have a chance to shoot every species of legal game bird in South America, all in one wingshooting vacation. This makes for an efficient use of time, and suits shooters that think they may not ever get another chance to come back to South America for a very long time a great South American wingshooting opportunity.
Many hunters frequently ask what caliber of shotgun is best suited for Perdiz hunting in Argentina or Uruguay. One might as well ask what brand of pickup truck is best for working cattle…Perdiz can be downed handily with everything from a .410 to a 12 ga. Upland hunting in Argentina normally requires the hunter to walk longer and farther to get a limit of birds (there simply are not nearly as many Peridz per square mile in that country) and prefer a lighter gun, therefore a 20 or 28 ga. would be most appropriate.
On the other hand, those hunting in Uruguay tend to not sweat carrying a 12 ga. since the birds are as thick as ticks in an East Texas forest. As previously mentioned, the Perdiz shooting is over in just about an hour for capable shooters under normal conditions.
Perdiz hunting is an upland bird hunting trip that is unique to South America, and an experience that any serious international wingshooter should consider making a part of his or her bird hunting memories.
